What is a 1098-T and what do I use it for?
The 1098-T is an informational form only. The current US tax code requires colleges and universities to provide Form 1098-T: 学费 Payments Statement, for the purposes of determining a student's eligibility for the Hope and 生活time Learning education tax credits as per the 970年出版, Tax Benefits for Education.
When and where is the 1098-T available?
The University is required to have the 1098-T available to the students by January 31, for the prior calendar year transactions. The 1098-T is available through your ePay and instructions are detailed, above, on this web page.
Who is excluded from receiving a 1098-T?
The University is not required to furnish a 1098-T statement for:
- Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program
- Nonresident alien students, unless requested by the student
- Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with 奖学金, 奖助金, 咖啡, 第三方付款, or VA payments to the school.
What is the University required to report on the 1098-T?
The IRS requires schools to report "Payments Received for Qualified 学费 and Related Expenses" (Box 1). The University reports only the ""Payments Received for Qualified 学费 and Related Expenses" (Box 1)
This is a change from 2017 when The University reported "Amounts Billed for Qualified 学费 and Related Expenses" (Box 2).
What are "Qualified Expenses" and are housing, 书, and other miscellaneous charges included on the 1098-T?
Only tuition and mandatory 费用 are considered qualified expenses such as:
- Credit Earning 学费 Charges
- 一般学生费用
- 贷款及债务服务费用
- 入学考试费用
- 特定课程费用
Can I use the 1098-T as proof of payment for tuition and 费用?
No. The University is not required to provide this information on the 1098-T. Students must track receipts of their payments to the school in order to claim the tuition and related expenses. You can retrieve copies of your payment history with a valid picture ID from the CMU Business Office or via ePay.
What time frame is included on the 1098-T?
The University is required to report the 1098-T by tax year, not academic year.
